What Happens In The Senior Sessions? The senior students will firstly commence a warm up of approximately 20 minutes duration, where this is completed by an instructor who is qualified and of a higher grade belt. The warm up starts with pulse raising exercises and then stretching combined with strength exercises which are all related to ju-jitsu techniques. The students will then practice break falls as a group and then are asked to pair off with someone who is of the same belt colour (same grade). Size and build does not matter in this pairing of students, as you cannot chose your attacker in real life situations. After a few months with the Tajima Ju-jitsu school the yellow belt standard can be achieved and the training undertaken will become closely related to real life situations. For example the attacks from training partners are more at close quarters, as they would be in the street. All the instructors ask is that training partners respect each other without causing serious injury to each other and ensure the techniques are carried out safely without unnecessary aggression. As the students progress through the belts, there is the expectation that students become more accurate in terms of skill application of ju-jitsu techniques, therefore, the chances of injury become significantly reduced. The club has a very high standard of discipline which is required to practice this style of ju-jitsu, where lessons are extremely physical in terms of bodily movements, strength and stamina. Beginners are only asked to do what they can do and if there is the need to stop at anytime and observe techniques in order to learn, this is fine. This allows new members to relax and not feel pressurised into doing every technique, increasing tiredness, therefore increasing risk of injury due to lack of concentration when tired. Beginners will be gently guided through a progression of techniques, starting with simple techniques and then as the skill level improves, there will be the transition through new techniques. Every person will work at their own level and gain confidence in the skills as they progress through the different belts. Towards the end of the session there will be a "Randori" (free mat practice) for ten minutes when students pair off and practice any techniques desired under the strict guidance of instructors. With regards to the grading of belts, there is no time scale on the individual development of each student, as each student has different learning styles, age of student, levels of commitment, personal fitness and ability to learn new skills. Therefore, the students take the grades when appropriate and deemed sufficiently ready by the instructors.
