What Happens In The Junior Sessions?

The junior sessions are similar to the senior sessions where the philosophy of the club is based on a very strict level of discipline.  This keeps junior members safe and allows for the learning of new skills in a very safe environment which is strictly controlled by the instructors.

On entrance to the training room (Dojo) each member is required to complete a standing bow as a mark of respect and also before stepping onto the matted area (tatami), a second standing bow is required.  If the two bows are not completed, the students will be informed and corrected about their behaviour before entering the room and matted area.

If a student arrives late, there will the be requirement for that student to kneel by the side of the matted area (tatami) and then wait until the instructor provides permission to enter the mat.  Once again, the bow will be expected before stepping onto the matted area.

The students will undergo a warm up which consists of pulse raising games, exercises and some stretching and strength exercises, again, all related to Ju-jitsu.

Students will be paired off with appropriate grades and again, size and build of the pairs do not matter and secondly it allows each student to train with different body weights and sizes.  This will allow the student to be provided with a variety of training partners, which will allow for the enhancement of skills learnt.

Students will be shown techniques that are required for the next belt up or for a possible attack from an attacker on the street.  This training will allow for improved fitness, better application of skilled movements and judgement of skills used in a variety of situations.

The junior students are taught to defend themselves or others who cannot defend themselves from attack including attacks from punches, kicks, holds and weapon attacks such as bottles, chains, knives and coshes.  The students would not use real weapons, there would be the use of plastic bottles, knives and chains to prevent serious injury.

The students are given safety advice and informed about the 'tap out rule' and significant safety briefings before each technique to ensure students are indeed safe.

Finally, the last ten minutes of the session are games and drills designed to ensure team work and social skills that include communication amongst some of the  skills required to work as a team.

With regards to the grading sessions for belts, this is taken at each students pace and provided there is a regular commitment and adherance to safety procedures, the student can progress at their own rate.
